The club are saddened by the news of the sad passing of former manager Ian McNeill

Ian took over the managerial reins at Town in 1987 and managed to steady the ship and pull Town away from relegation and retain League Two status. He brought through a number of fans favourites to the club with the likes of Victor Kasule, Tony Kelly and John McGinlay playing for Town.

He started his career in football in 1949 and had successful spells playing for the likes of Leicester, Brighton and Southend. He started his managerial career with Ross County but made a name for himself at Wigan where they entered the Football League under his leadership.

Shrewsbury Town chairman Roland Wycherley spoke on behalf of the club

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Ian McNeill.

“He played his part in an Interesting and exciting period in Shrewsbury Town’s history.

“During that time there we many good memories and players who entertained and became favourites of the supporters.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time.”
