England game ends in a stalemate

The Montgomery Waters Meadow played host to England under 18’s vs Brazil under 18’s on a sunny evening in Shrewsbury. England dominated throughout the game and looked certain to score at times. Brazil held out though creating few attacking options.

Kick-off:

Brazil had the first chance of the game, winger Brenner pulled a dangerous ball from the left across the box, Joel Latibeaudiere made a commanding challenge as Alberto looked to pull the trigger, clearing the ball in the process.  

A clever interception from Gomez set England on the attack. He found Oakley-Boothe with space in the middle of Brazils half looking to play Phil Foden in behind, Luan Candido did well to clear the danger.  

Phil Foden received possession wide right, he knocked the ball past his man but was fouled in the process earing England a free kick in a dangerous area. The resulting free kick was cleared but England did well to maintain possession before playing some tantalising passing football to set up another chance. Gomes found Brewster on the edge of the box with space to shoot, his powerful shot blocked and cleared.  

Brazil’s right back Luan received a yellow in the 26th minute for a third consecutive foul on Foden. The free kick was squared for George McEachran to shoot on the edge of the 18. His deflected shot found its way to Rhian Brewster in the box who missed the ball when he looked certain to score.  

Shortly after, Brazils Luan Pereira broke forward with a blistering run past the England midfield. He worked the space for a venomous strike but Curtis Anderson was equal to it, tipping the ball away with his left hand.  

Half Time: 0-0  

Substitutions: Brazil swapped the booked Luan Candido for Weverson. Candido had a torrid game against Phil Foden. Central midfielder Luan Pereira came off for Matteus Stockl and Vitinho made way for Lincoln.  

A patient piece of well worked passing presented England with the first chance in the second half Foden did well to break down the right before playing a low ball across the face of goal. Gabriel Brazao did well to come out and hold on to the cross.   

Angel Gomez popped up to play a dinked ball over the defence from the edge of Brazils box. The delicate lobbed pass found Kirby with the space to pull the trigger, the youngster hitting the side netting.   

Booking: Joel Latibeaudiere was booked in the 64th minute for a hard challenge in the middle of the park.  

With England looking for an opener, George McEachran played a floating ball over the top to set Phil Foden on the run down the right. Foden cut inside and found Kirby on the left with space to pick his head up. Kirby was ruled offside in a tight decision.

Substitutions: Captain Angel Gomes was replaced by Emile Smith-Rowe for England. Brenner and Yuti Alberto made was for Helio Junio and Antony for Brazil.  

Jonathon Panzo linked up well with Nya Kirby on the overlap. Kirby set Foden on the run into the left side of the box. The young lion picked his head up to pull a fast and low ball across the box but couldn’t find anyone and Brazil cleared their lines.  

Substitution: Brazil replaced Victor Bobsin for Gustavo Henrigue. England swapped Rhian Brewster for Daniel Loader up top.  

Emile Smith picked his head up shortly after coming on to play Kirby in behind, Kirby was one on one with the keeper but hit his shot straight at Brazao who had come out quickly.  

England pressed to take the lead in the last ten minutes. Kirby found Panzo again on the overlap, the left back played in another low cross which Weverson nearly put in the back of his own net. As it were, the ball rolled just wide of the post for a corner.  

Substitution: Brazil switched centre back Lucas Halter for Edu.

In the last minute McEachran looked to play Emile Smith-Rowe in behind with a high pass. They youngster took the ball wide before scuffing his cross.

After the game there was a practice penalty shootout which England won 5-4.
