Club captain Mat Sadler couldn’t help his team secure a Checkatrade trophy final winners medal. Town fell one nil losers to an inform Lincoln side who secured a final win from an early goal from Elliot Whitehouse.
Mat Sadler is disappointed with the result and feels his side didn’t reach their full potential on the day, he said: “I don’t think we really turned up on the day, especially in the first half. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. We had a game plan and didn’t play to that.
“We have lost the game and had to stomach watching them lift the trophy, that will live long in the memory. On a positive note, if we can use this feeling as motivation we can go onto to succeed in something really special this season.
Sadler felt Lincoln imposed their selves well, especially on set pieces, he said: “They’re a big tram, they put the ball in the box and attacked it well.
“We knew that was coming but we didn’t defend it well enough. We knew exactly how they were going to play and we didn’t deal with that.”
“We lick our wounds, we have to use this as motivation to go onto something more special.
Sadler was pleased with the backing from the traveling Salopian fans, he said: “It’s a long old way, they got behind us for sure. It was a real special occasion and we will need them from now until the end of the season.
“I think we all know there’s some bigger fish to fry in terms of the league. This was a nice day and a nice occasion but that’s gone now. Were in for two prizes this season and this one hasn’t quite worked out.”
