Two goal Whalley reacts to Oxford win

Shaun Whalley’s two goals and man of the match performance helped his side beat Oxford United at The Montgomery Waters Meadow three goals to two after a strong performance from Town.

Town now sit in second place in the Sky Bet League One and Whalley was pleased with his goals but delighted his team got the victory, he said: “I was delighted to get the goals obviously, but I was even more delighted we got the three points.

“I thought we fully deserved the win, but it was a bit closer than we probably should have made it but we got over the line in the end and that’s the main thing.

“I thought today was a good performance, even though we made it a bit closer for ourselves in the end.

“I thought we dominated the first half, and I thought we were fully in our right to go into the break one nil ahead.”

Whalley was also pleased with contribution to the teams win, the winger said: “I just put it into the area, they say keep it on target if you’re going to put it into the box from that type angle.

“Fortunately no one got a touch on it and it went in the bottom corner and I was delighted to get that goal and give us the one goal lead.

On the second goal Whalley added: “It was a great pull back from James Bolton and I just found the far side of the goal.

“That was to go three up and I thought we would maybe go on and score a couple more and put the game to bed but then they got the goal back and it made it more uncomfortable but we got over the line.

“But the team is most important and everyone knows I work hard for the team, but the goals are an added bonus that helps the team, we just need to keep on winning.”

Town next face Lincoln city in the Checkatrade final at Wembley on Sunday.
