Payne reflects on Posh victory

Shrewsbury Town’s Top Scorer Stefan Payne was delighted to be back out there and amongst the goals.

Payne scored Town’s second as they fought back from a goal down at half-time to win 3-1.

Stefan has been struggling with an injury recently, but he was pleased to be back in the starting 11.

“It was good to be back involved, good to get another win and good to get another goal”, admitted Payne.

“I think the second-half performance was like us, as in the pressing, the tackling, the headers, and obviously it showed because we went onto win the game.

“He (Paul Hurst) didn’t say much at half-time. It was just about believing in yourself, keep doing what has got us where we are and just run over them.

“I think in the second-half we came out a totally different team and that equaliser gave us confidence to go on and win the game.”

Payne’s goal was his 14th of the season and he admitted that it was an instinctive finish.

“To be honest I didn’t see what happened”, said Stef.

“I was just getting in position and I just heard everyone shouting at me, so I turned round and I saw that it was me and Eisa against the defender.

“I was too tired to take him on, so I thought I would just shift it and try and get it in the corner. It was good to get another goal and good to get a win.

“The boys said about passing to Eisa because against Oxford I could have passed to Shaun, so that was in my mind and I had to make sure I scored so that the boys can’t get onto me again.”

Payne’s goal was his final touch of the game as he was immediately replaced by Lenell John-Lewis and Stefan was delighted for his fellow striker who grabbed Town’s third.

“I’m buzzing for him”, said Payne.

“Again it shows that we’ve got the people that can come on and effect the game too. I haven’t been in the team recently and I’ve scored, Lenny’s come on and scored, so we’ve got a really good squad.”
