Gaffer on his decision to name Mat Sadler as Captain and Lenell John-Lewis as Club Captain

Shrewsbury Town Boss John Askey has revealed his thinking behind the decision to give Mat Sadler the Captain’s Armband for the 2018/19 season.

Sadler will lead the side out after being named as Team Captain, whilst Askey has also decided to appoint Lenell John-Lewis as the Club Captain.

John told the players yesterday before announcing it to the full squad this morning and he admits that it was an easy decision in the end.

“I think since I came in Mat’s stood out as a Captain and obviously he’s got the experience, not only at this level, but above”, Askey told ShrewsWeb.

“He conducts himself in the right way, not only in games but in training as well, and he’s good about the place, so the perfect one to choose really. He’s respected by the players and the staff as well, so it wasn’t a difficult decision.

“He had a good season last season. He’s 33, but the way players look after themselves now there’s no reason why he can’t go on for quite a bit longer.”

Lenell John-Lewis takes over from Sadler as the Club Captain and Askey believes he will be a good ambassador.

“Every time he trains he does it properly, every time he plays he gives everything that he’s got”, said John.

“He’s a good example to the rest of the players, he’s well-liked by the rest of the players, well respected and the perfect one to do that job.

“He’s a really nice bloke and as I say he conducts himself well like Mat, so again it was quite an easy choice.”

John believes it’s important to tap into the more experienced members of the squad and hopes that it brings the whole group together.

“It’s a good buffer for myself to have two people like that”, admitted Askey.

“Not only do I talk to my staff, but I talk to the players as well and to have experienced players like that that I can go to and tap into is sometimes very useful.

“They’re the ones on the pitch and it’s about all of us. It’s not about listening to just the manager or just the coaches, they’ve got to have an input as well, because we’re all in it together and we all want the same thing.”
