John Askey on Greg Docherty

Gaffer reacts to bringing Greg Docherty inon-loan from Rangers

Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey is pleased to have brought highly rated midfielder Greg Docherty to the club.

Docherty, 21, joins on a season-long loan from Rangers and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game against Charlton Athletic.

Greg is a player that John Askey has been looking at for quite some time and the Town Gaffer is pleased that he has chosen to come to Shrewsbury.

“I’m really pleased”, Askey told ShrewsWeb.

“Greg’s got good pedigree, played a lot of games for his age and helps to strengthen the midfield up, an area of the park that I thinks vital for us.

“He had one of two options. He’s done well getting his move to Rangers and then from what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard about him he’s done well at Rangers.

“A new manager’s gone in there and obviously he’s got his own plans, but I think he’s still very much a part of Rangers, it’s just that they want him to play games, so hopefully we’ve benefitted from it.”

Docherty has played over 100 times in the Scottish Premiership and Askey believes he has the qualities needed for League One football.

“He’s energetic, very energetic”, said John.

“I think he was an 800m champion, so it shows with his stamina, but he’s got a bit of pace about him as well and he can go past players, as well as pick a pass, so I’m looking forward to working with him.

“He’s one that can get in behind defenders, which is vital for the midfield players because you want players who can get from one end of the pitch to the other, and he gives us that along with one or two other players we’ve got.”

Docherty becomes the fifth central midfield signing of the summer and John is pleased with how that area is looking.

“We are getting stronger”, said Askey

“I’ve said before that I think it’s vital that you are strong in midfield. I’ve always, in previous teams that I’ve had, had good players in there, probably better than the level they were playing at, so if we can do the same at Shrewsbury then it enables us to control games and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
