Gaffer's thoughts ahead of the Checkatrade game

Shrewsbury Town kick off their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with the visit of Manchester City’s Under-21 team.

Manchester City’s young side will be welcomed to the Montgomery Waters Meadow for the 7pm kick-off.

Town boss, John Askey, is looking forward to the test and hopes his side have enough to progress to the next round.

“Who ever we play, we know we might be chasing the ball a lot,” Askey said. “It will be a different game than what we’re used to.

“With the size of their squads, they could pull out a really strong team against us. We will see, but it will be an interesting one.”

Askey also feels the competition will be good for rotating the squad and giving more of his players a chance to impress.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Askey told Shrewsweb. “Obviously, the league is the most important thing.

“It does give us an opportunity to give players a game as well, but we have a squad which I believe is strong.

“There is no reason why we can’t make changes in the Checkatrade and still do well.

“The more games you win, the more confident you get, so it probably helped them last season in the league as well.”
