Sam Ricketts post Sunderland

29 December 2018

Sam Ricketts relfects on Town's 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Shrewsbury Town were on the road this afternoon as Sam Ricketts and his men travelled to face Sunderland.

Town managed to secure a 1-1 draw with the Black Cats after Luke Waterfall headed home for Town in the first-half.

Sam was pleased with the point and was happy with the performance from his team at the Stadium Of Light.

“I was delighted with the performance,” said the Shrews manager. “I asked my players to carry out a game plan.

“I tried to make it as clear as possible and they were outstanding in carrying that out.

“We have deservedly come away with a draw. We had chances to score one or two more – which I don’t think would have flattered us.

“You are going to defend and have to put your body on the line coming here and block shots - that’s what football is.

“What I said to the players after the game was well done for carrying out the game plan as requested and that they have now set a standard for themselves.

“They have shown each other and everyone else what they are capable of and now it’s just a case of consistently doing it.”

Sam was pleased with the contribution of Luke Waterfall and felt his defender was due a goal.

“I did say he was due a goal,” said Sam. “He’s very good in the air, especially when he goes forward.

“He was due a goal, so I was delighted for him. It capped off an excellent first 30 minutes.

“We have been really poor away from home recently, early on in games. We had a clear strategy in the first 15 minutes.

“Not only did we carry that out, it carried on for the first 30 minutes. We really nullified their threat and the crowd.”

Town next welcome Fleetwood Town to the Montgomery Waters Meadow on New Years Day.
