Shaun Whalley post Walsall

6 December 2018

Shaun Whalley reflects on Town's win against Walsall.

Shrewsbury Town ran out 2-1 winners over Walsall last evening in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The win saw Town progress into the next round and gave Sam Ricketts his first win as Town manager.

Shaun Whalley was pleased with the win and was happy to have made his return to the pitch.

“I was a bit nervous to be honest,” Shaun said. “It was a weird one. I haven’t started on the bench for a while and I forgot my shirt when I came out.

“I knew I was coming on with half an hour to go and the lads had done really well up until then and then we got the second goal.

“It was just a case of seeing out the game really. They got one back, but I thought we saw it out pretty comfortably. The lads deserve all the credit - they did really well.

“A lot of the Walsall lads played in the league game earlier on in the season, so they had a strong team out.

“It was a great performance from the lads who came in and they deserve all the credit.”

Shaun is also looking forward to working with the new Town manager and was pleased to help with his first win.

“It’s early days,” said Shaun. “I am sure he is going to implement his style of play on us.

“He’s come in and it’s great for him to get a win straight away. Like he said yesterday – we were going well anyway under Coyne and Eric and they deserve credit as well.

“They got us winning games of football and we are on a good roll. I think you could see that tonight – our confidence was up.

“It was a different side we put out tonight, but there is just a real buzz around the place at the moment.

“That’s only good for the manager coming in and I can’t wait to start working with him properly.”
