CEO talks about Lionel Richie coming to Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury Town CEO Brian Caldwell has spoken of his delight at bringing Lionel Richie to Shropshire.

The international superstar will be playing at the Montgomery Waters Meadow on Wednesday 13th June as part of his ‘All The Hits’ UK Summer Tour.

This will be the third time that Shrewsbury Town have hosted a concert of this magnitude, having welcomed Elton John in 2011 and Rod Stewart last year.

Brian is pleased to be brining another star name to Shrewsbury and is hopeful that Lionel will prove popular.

“I was delighted to announce that this morning”, said Caldwell.

“There’s been a bit of work going on in the last few weeks to get the announcement out there. He’s doing a number of venues and I’m delighted he’s coming to Shrewsbury. I think he’s a good act to have here, fits in well, and hopefully will be a popular one for the people of Shropshire and beyond.

“It’s been bubbling on for the last number of weeks now. We signed a contract at the tail-end of last week and we were subject to a non-disclosure, so I’m delighted the news is out there now and we can start with the planning and organisation.

“I’m hoping Lionel Richie will be a popular choice. I think everyone likes at least one of the hits he’s had. He’s sold over 90 million records worldwide, so it’s another good headline artist for us to have that everybody will know the name of.”

Around 16,000 fans packed into the Montgomery Waters Meadow for last summer’s Rod Stewart concert and Caldwell believes lessons have been learnt for this time around.

“I think we can learn a lot (from Rod Stewart)”, Brian said.

“We did our own debrief with the staff and with the Council to make sure that we learnt lessons from things that didn’t go as well as they should have done last year, so we are hoping to put these right and make sure it runs well.

“We’ve got a template now from how things ran last year and we plan to operate similarly. Obviously this year we’ve got certain things that we will need to tweak because we’ve got Lidl to consider, but the concert in the main went very well with Rod Stewart and we are in a good position to repeat what went well.”

The club would like to remind everyone that ticket sales are being handled through ticket agencies and details of this can be found here.

Shrewsbury Town will be offering hospitality packages for this event. For more information on these please contact our Commercial Department via commercial@shrewsburytown.co.uk or call 01743 289177 ext 218
