Deano Makes CheckaTrade Shortlist

19 January 2018

Deano joins Hiwula (Fleetwood Town), Musonda (Chelsea), Smith (Yeovil Town) and Davies (Oldham Athletic) on the shortlist

Following the completion of the Third Round of the Checkatrade Trophy, the shortlist for the Player of the Round competition has been revealed with Dean Henderson making the final five. You can vote for the Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper at EFL.com/playeroftheround and if he takes home the trophy, you could have the honour of not only presenting the award, but also winning tickets to the Checkatrade Trophy final. *

The Shrewsbury hero across 90 minutes and during the penalty shootout, Henderson put in a top-quality performance in the Shrews goal. A breath-taking flying stop to a 30-yard Raul Correia shot was the pick of his saves in open play, while he also saved Danny Philliskirk’s opening penalty for Blackpool in the shootout, setting up his sides nail biting victory.

The conclusion of the Third Round saw teams bag their spot in the Quarter-Finals and move a step closer to the final at Wembley. Fleetwood won against Bury, stretching their unbeaten streak to five in the competition, Yeovil Town secured their progression in the first 26 minutes with two goals against Forest Green, Lincoln City scored against Rochdale in the 88th minute and Chelsea U21s scraped their way through with a winning goal against Portsmouth in the 96th minute. Three teams, Peterborough, Shrewsbury and Oxford Utd, gained their spot in the quarter-finals through penalty shootouts.

The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round shortlist for the Third Round is as follows:

  • Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town)
  • Jordy Hiwula (Fleetwood Town)
  • Charly Musonda (Chelsea)
  • Nathan Smith (Yeovil Town)
  • Craig Davies (Oldham Athletic)

The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round competition gives fans the opportunity to vote for the player they feel shined in the Third Round.

An independent football expert selected the five worthy players that make up the shortlist and now supporters have the chance to vote for the final two via EFL.com. The two players with the most votes will then be considered by a judging panel consisting of representatives from the EFL, before the overall winner is revealed.

Every fan who votes will be entered into a prize draw, with one lucky supporter getting the chance to present the Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round award to the winning player and win tickets to the final of the competition at Wembley in April.

Fans have until 9am on Monday  22nd January to register their votes for the award. To vote for the player you feel deserves to be the Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round, please visit EFL.com/playeroftheround.
