Omar Beckles Post Oldham Athletic

2 January 2018

Beckles looks back on 1-0 win

Shrewsbury Town defender Omar Beckles was pleased to pick up another home victory as Town beat Oldham Athletic 1-0.

It was the perfect way to kick start 2018, with Shaun Whalley’s 16th minute goal proving the difference between the two sides.

The wind made it a bit of a scrappy affair in the second-half, but Beckles praised his teammates for digging in.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but a few of them have been like that recently”, Omar told the Press.

“You just have to dig in, the lads put a shift in and getting three points is all that matters at the end of the day and we move onto the next one.

“It doesn’t really feel like we are going to be conceding, so it’s a good feeling to have. We just try and build from the foundation of keeping clean sheets and then from there we see if we can get the win.”

Shaun Whalley’s goal was his ninth of the season and Omar praised the winger’s character.

“He does it loads in training”, Beckles said.

“He’s such a good player, so it’s good to see him getting the goals and getting the rewards because he’s such a good character as well.

“Sometimes that gets missed, but he missed the penalty the other day and then scored. To put that behind you is great and that’s the sort of characters we’ve got in this team.”

Oldham came on strongly in the second-half, but Beckles admitted that he always felt comfortable of keeping a clean sheet.

“We still felt comfortable”, said Omar.

“They try and play because that’s their new style of play, but we were always happy for them to have it in certain areas and then hit them on the counter.

“We looked comfortable and I don’t think Deano had loads to do, but when he was called upon he did well.”

Town took 10 points from a possible 12 over the festive period and Omar was delighted with how it’s gone in recent weeks.

“I’m buzzing”, admitted Omar.

“You want to get as many points as possible and that Christmas period is so tough with the intensity of playing game after game over that short period of time.

“It’s good to get the points and hopefully the fans are happy over that period, which I’m sure they are, so it’s good.”
