Town to take on Kidderminster Harriers and Burnley
Shrewsbury Town are pleased to confirm that the first-team squad will take part in two behind closed doors friendlies over the next couple of weeks.
The first will see Town take on National League North side Kidderminster Harriers on Wednesday 11th July, whilst the squad will then take on Premier League side Burnley on Tuesday 17th July.
Meanwhile, there will no longer be a game taking place on Tuesday 24th July. The plan was to take on Preston North End on this date, but the squad will now concentrate on the game against AFC Telford United the following evening (Wednesday 25th July).
Other pre-season friendlies this summer include games against Bristol City (Saturday 14th July), Brentford (Saturday 21st July) and Port Vale (Saturday 28th July).
ShrewsWeb caught up with Town boss John Askey to discuss the behind closed doors friendlies and the friendly schedule as a whole.
“They’re good games”, said John.
“It’s important that we play against different opposition and it gives the lads a good test.
“You never put too much on pre-season because the only thing that matters is how you start the season, but it can give the lads confidence if they are doing well.
“Playing Kidderminster we will probably have more of the ball and they will be working hard and will be competitive.
“Against Burnley we will probably have less of the ball and it will be us having to do the work, but whatever obstacle you come across you have to work it out, so it will be good for the players.
“We’ve got plenty of games. I think it’s five or six games that we’ve got in pre-season, which is more than enough and some of them are very competitive games, so I’m pleased with what we’ve got.”
All pre-season games are subject to change.
