John Askey talks about settling into their pre-season camp in Spain

Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey is pleased with how the pre-season trip to Spain has started.

The players checked into the Oliva Nova Resort near to Valencia yesterday (Sunday) and were put straight to work.

The squad will work up to three times a day over the next week as they prepare for the start of the 2018/19 season.

Askey spoke to ShrewsWeb about his first impressions of the facilities.

“They are very good”, said John.

“We were very pleased when we got here and saw the state of the pitch, it’s excellent, and the gym is as well. We can’t ask for any better.

“The lads were up at half-past seven today and we went for a run before breakfast. Then they trained at 10, finished around about 12, and they’ve got a session this afternoon in the gym at 3 O’Clock.

“It’s full on days, not much time for themselves, but they’re here to work and that’s what they are doing.

“We’ve started to get the ball out, so it’s slightly different training than they had previously, but they are still working really hard, and it looks like they are enjoying it, as much as you can enjoy pre-season.

“You want people to come into training and enjoy being in training. I think it all helps in getting that team spirit, so if I can see one or two having a laugh and a joke at the right times then it will be encouraged.”

John also confirmed that he will be running the rule over a third trialist with former Birmingham City and Barnsley Goalkeeper, Nick Townsend, joining Jake Kean and Devonte Redmond over in Spain.

“Nick’s come in and we’re just having a look at Nick this week”, said Askey.

“He’s got good experience for somebody so young, so we will have a look at him and then make a decision at the end of the week.

“We will have an 11 v 11 tomorrow because it’s important that we get them playing as quickly as possible, get them back into it, and it gives me chance to have a look at the ones I’ve not seen before.”
