Gilliead joins Town

Alex Gilliead signs a two-year deal at Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to announce the signing of Alex Gilliead on a two-year deal from Newcastle United.

Alex has been with Newcastle United since the age of 16, but left the North East club this summer and will join Town on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old winger spent last season on-loan at Bradford City, making 48 appearances, and has also spent time on-loan at Carlisle United and Luton Town.

Alex becomes John Askey’s fourth signing as Shrewsbury Town boss and he can’t wait to get started.

“I’m very pleased to be here,” Alex said.

“I’m just ready to kick on now and get the season started. Obviously we have Pre-Season to do.

“It’s been a couple of weeks while it was getting sorted but I’m glad to be here.”

The move is Alex’s first permanent move away from first Club, Newcastle United, but feels it is the right time to take the next step in his career.

“It’s the first big move in my career,” the winger said.

“It had to be the right one. I had a look at a few other offers that I had but I thought this was the most appealing one and the one that fitted me right.

“Coming off the back of a great season last year the Club is looking to do it again and I want to be a part of that.

“I want to show everyone what I can do and start my career with the best Club I think I can do it with.

“I spoke to the manager last week and he was quite similar with my views with what we wanted to do and how I want to play.

“I came down yesterday and I had a look at the facilities and I thought the facilities were top draw.”

The former England under-20 player feels Shrewsbury Town offers him a great basis to further develop as a player.

“I’m still young in terms of football age,” Gilliead said.

“I’m 22 and I’ve still got a lot to learn and a lot to improve on so I feel under the manager and with the lads I will be able to improve and bring something to the team.

“I was at Bradford last year and I have had two other loans before that so I have had my fair share of games so I know what the demands are.

“I just want to come and do well and show what can do.”
