Gaffer reflects on the pre-season friendly against Brentford

Shrewsbury Town welcomed Brentford to the Montgomery Waters Meadow for Town’s home Pre-Season fixture.

Despite Town scoring twice through Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Fejiri Okenabirhie, Town fell to a defeat at the hands of The Bees with a 3-2 score line.

Askey was disappointed with the result but feels there are positive signs from his squad. “I thought there were spells where we did well and spells where we didn’t do so well,” Askey said.

“I’m disappointed with the goals we gave away, especially the first one… well all three really.

“I can see it coming together, obviously I know what we need but it was a good work out for us.

“I thought we were better than what we showed against Burnley. It was a tough opposition and they test you and you find most of the game you are chasing so you have to be organised.

“The goals we gave away were individual errors really.”

Despite the loss, Askey was pleased to see two of his new signings get on the score sheet against a strong opposition. “Fejri took it great,” the Gaffer said. “I thought he looked dangerous every time he got it.

“That’s why I brought him here because he gets goals and always seems to get chances.

“Obviously with Aaron getting a goal will do his confidence no end of good. Throughout he played really well and brought other people into the game and showed us what he could do.

“If we get up the pitch we need somebody who can get a hold of the ball and he can do that.

“Not only does he get a hold of it, he brings people into play so he’s one who the rest of the team will enjoy playing with and appreciate him.

“There’s no reason, and he showed today, why he can’t get goals. He’s good in the air, he’s got a good shot on him and he needs to just hit the ground running which he’s done today.”

Town’s next fixture is a trip to the New Bucks Head on Wednesday, where Askey’s men will take on AFC Telford United.
