Gaffer reflects on Burnley victory

Town’s third Pre-Season game of their campaign got under way against the Premier League’s Burnley.

Town managed to secure a one nil victory against The Clarets at Burnley’s Barnfield training complex through a Taylor own goal.

Despite getting the win Askey feels there is room for improvement ahead of the Club’s next game at home against Brentford.

“I’m not as pleased as I was against Bristol,” Askey said. “I know we won but it’s performances that I want and I wasn’t happy with the performance today, especially first half.

“There is plenty to work on but it’s another good work out. Obviously we’re playing against good players, they’re Premier League players.

“Obviously we’re playing against quality but we need to be better than we were today. Hopefully we can sort that out during the training sessions and move on to Saturday.

“The main thing is getting it right for the first game of the season. You have got to set you’re standards higher. We wont get carried away because we did win, we need to work harder than we did today.”

John was pleased that the team are now building their fitness ahead of the fast approaching season. “To be fair, the players are very fit,” John said.

“When I came in you could see the fitness levels but there is nothing like playing games and that’s why Pre-Season is there. Hopefully come the first games we will be up to speed.”

Askey confirmed that Abo Eisa and Jon Nolan were absent from the game. “John is ill,” The gaffer said. “He rang at five o’clock this morning to say he’d been up all night. Hopefully he will be ok for Saturday.

“Abo had his graduation day. I thought it was only fair that he went to his graduation. He’s worked hard to achieve it.

“He doesn’t lack fitness so I’m not too worried about him.”

Town next face Brentford in their third Pre-Season game at the Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday.
