Gaffer reflects on final pre-season friendly

Town’s pre-season campaign came to an end with Shrewsbury getting a 4-2 win     Over Neil Aspin’s Port Vale.

Goals from Aaron Amadi-Hollway, Shaun Whalley and Lenell John-Lewis ensured Town left Vale Park win the win ahead of the forthcoming Sky Bet League One season, which commences next weekend.

Askey was was pleased to end the pre-season Campaign and was enthused by the performance against a good Port Vale side.

“It was a good way to finish,” the Gaffer said. “As I have said previously, this will be forgotten once we start the season but it gives us confidence and I thought it was our best performance in pre-season.

“It was difficult conditions, it was windy and the pitch wasn’t great but I was really pleased with some of the football we played.

“With Shaun’s goal we kept it for around nine or eight passes and it was a great ball by Jon and a good finish by Shaun.

“Again on the second goal, it was another well worked goal so I’m really pleased and it can only do us good.

“With Aaron getting two and then Lenny coming on and scoring, it’s nice to get your strikers scoring.”

Askey is confident his side are ready for the challenge of the new season and is pleased with how his new team coped during pre-season.

“It has been good for me getting to know the players,” Askey said. “I’ve seen an improvement each week.

“I just want the games to come now and hopefully we can start off with a win. It seems to have been a long pre-season.

“We’re just gearing ourselves up to the first game and we just hope everything has been done and everything is in place.

“Sometimes you just need that little bit of luck at the start to get the season going.

“If we get off to a winning start, the confidence will start to flow.”

Town will open 2018/19 campaign against Bradford City at the Montgomery Waters Meadow this following Saturday.
