Filan named Assistant Manager

John Filan becomes Assistant to John Askey

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to announce the appointment of John Filan as John Askey’s Assistant Manager.

Filan joins the coaching staff after having experience with Blackburn’s Academy and also working alongside Askey at Macclesfield Town.

John was pleased to have been appointed as Askey’s assistant and is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s a great opportunity for myself and I’m very thankful to the manager for his belief to bring me in and also the Football Club for welcoming me,” said Filan.

“The first day has been looking at the main ground and getting a feel for the place. When you walk in the door it’s got the feel of somewhere that is done right.

“I’ve only been in the place an hour and a half and so far my enthusiasm for it is warranted. It’s a big step (For me) and it’s something I have always focused on since finishing playing.”

The former goalkeeper turned coach outlined that his role as Assistant Manager does not affect Danny Coyne’s role as the clubs Goalkeeping Coach

“Because of my playing career people think goalkeeping coach, I’ve never really been interested in the goalkeeping coaching side of it,” Askey’s new man said.

“When I have done something for 35 years, something else was interesting me.

“We’re very fortunate that we have Danny here as goalkeeping coach, he’s an experienced player and coach which is great but the outfield side of it really interests me.

“Now this opportunity to work with John and the Football Club is the next step and I’m keen to get going.

“I’ve known John for three years now. He’s a proper football person, I’ve been offered jobs to work with different people but for me the people at a work place are more important.

“I wouldn’t be sitting here now if I didn’t believe in him. That’s the type of character I want to work for and I’m sure he will do a great job.”
