Gaffer on Friendlies

6 June 2018

John Askey looks ahead to pre-season

Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey believes that the club’s pre-season friendlies will be vital preparation for the season ahead.

Town have so far announced three friendlies – Brentford at home (21st July), AFC Telford United away (25th July) and Port Vale away (28th July) – with more set to be announced in due course.

ShrewsWeb caught up with the new Town boss yesterday to discuss the friendlies and he believes fitness will be key.

“The Telford game is just about getting our legs going and getting 90 minutes under our belts”, said John.

“The Port Vale game is a little bit of a stronger game, more like what we will expect on a Saturday, so they are two good games for us and local as well, which is important because it makes it easy for the supporters to go and watch the games.

“Brentford are a strong opposition and it will be another good game for us, where it will be a bit more of a test of our fitness than probably the other two.

“The main thing is fitness, getting the team to play together, me having a look at them and finding out which is the best way to play, but the main thing is getting through pre-season without any injuries.

“It’s important to play against different styles because every week you come up across different teams, but I think the main thing is how we play. Whatever game we go into it’s about us stamping our authority on games and that’s what I will try and get through to the players.”
