Gaffer on Pilkington

John Askey talks about the appointment of George Pilkington as First-Team Coach

Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey has welcomed his new First Team Coach George Pilkington to the club.

The former Macclesfield Town defender caps off his playing career in order to join Askey’s set up at The Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Askey was pleased to welcome George to the Club and is looking forward to working with him again.

“George played for me for quite a long time,” Askey said.

“I’ve known George quite a long time from his days at Port Vale.

“He’s been a really good footballer and he’s a good football person and somebody who I have a lot of trust in.

“I think he will bridge the gap between the players and the staff having only just finished playing.

“I think it gives us that understanding of what its still like to be a player.

“We’re pleased to get George and he’s a good asset to Shrewsbury Town.”

John also believes Pilkington will aid the coaching department defensively as that’s where the former Silkmen player played.

“He’s played plenty of games at this level,” Askey said.

“He understands the game and I’m sure he can help, especially the younger ones defensively.

“Its important players have fresh voices and it’s important for my self that you get different opinions.

“As long as we are all singing of the same hymn sheet at the end of the day that’s the main thing.”
