John Askey gives an update on transfer movement

Shrewsbury Town boss John Askey has confirmed that a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to bring new players to the club and to keep existing ones.

Craig MacGillivray and Junior Brown have both decided to move to new clubs in the last few days, Portsmouth and Coventry City respectively, but Askey has been in contact with other out of contract players and is hopeful they will sign.

“We’ve been trying to get as many signed as we can and it will still be ongoing”, said John.

“With finishing the season off late then there’s less time, but we haven’t got to panic because it’s important that we get the right players in.

“I think it’s important to try and keep players here. They’ve done well as a group and ideally we would want to sign everybody up. I don’t think it will be the case with all the players, but as many as we can we will be trying our best.”

Askey also confirmed that talks were on-going with a number of targets and he believes there could be movement in the coming days.

“We’re hoping that someone might sign soon”, John continued.

“There’s another one in the pipeline and it’s just a matter of talking to their agents and finalising things. It’s just a matter of being patient and not rushing too much.

“What we don’t want to do is just be left with the dregs, but there’s plenty of players still out there and we are in discussion with plenty.

“There’s obviously players that have gone back after being on-loan who need to be replaced, so it’s the most important time.”
