Gaffer Targets New Keeper

11 June 2018

Keeper on the list as Gaffer builds his squad

John Askey is working hard to prepare the Shrewsbury Town squad ahead of the 2018/2019 season.

Askey and CEO Brian Caldwell are working behind the scenes to ensure the squad are ready for the opening day.

Town’s squad looks strong with a large number of the players already under contract for next season.  The addition of Fejiri Okenabirhie and Kieran Kennedy has added two exciting young players to the squad.

With Dean Henderson’s loan over, Craig MacGillivray choosing to join Portsmouth and Shaun Rowley not being offered a new deal is leaves Town short of keepers.

John gave his thoughts on the clubs preparation as they look to bolster their squad during the transfer window.

‘’We need to replace the goalkeeper,” John said.

“That’s going to be a hard act to follow. I believe he was as good a keeper as there was in the league. The priority is now to get a keeper in.

“It’s going to be difficult to request a goalkeeper but it’s a vital position and we need to get it right.

“With Danny Coyne and John Filan we have got two people who know what it’s like so hopefully they can help me pick one.

“We need other positions and we are going to take our time, we don’t start till August.

“I’m experienced enough to know it’s no use jumping in and getting anyone. You need to get the right people.

“We will keep going until the right person pops up. There are a lot of players out there.

“I’m hoping to do a little bit more business this week but if we don’t, we go onto the following week and see what’s about.”
