Players return for pre-season testing

Shrewsbury Town’s Pre-Season got underway today with John Askey and his staff all returning for the first day.

Along with his staff, half of the squad returned for their Pre-Season testing with the rest of the squad following suit tomorrow.

Askey was pleased to be back getting his squad into shape ready for the new season. “It’s nice to get back,” said the Gaffer.

“I’ve been itching since I signed so I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to get started and get training.

“I can’t wait, it’s a fresh challenge for me and I’m looking forward to working with the players.

“What you’re trying to do is build up a good spirit amongst the players in a good working environment.

“Hopefully we get everybody fit and strong ready for the new season and mentally right. Hopefully we stay injury free.”

Fitness testing was on the agenda for the squad as half the players were put through their paces ahead of the second half coming in tomorrow.

“We have split them up into two groups,” John said.

“One group are in today, the younger ones. The older ones will be in tomorrow and they’ll be starting together on Wednesday.

“It will be nice to just get on the pitch.

“I think you find these days that nearly every player that comes back are in good shape. It wasn’t always the case years ago but now it is.

“With all the testing that goes on, anything we can help them with shows up and we will be trying our best to get them to where they need to be.

“I think (Sports Science) is important. Players expect it now and it needs to be used in the right way so that the players can take full advantage of it.

“Fitness is a massive thing, it always has been. The one thing as a player that you can do is get fit. You can’t always give players ability but you can certainly get fit.

“If you have got that little bit of ability and you’re fit then you have got a chance. It’s important as it was shown last season; they worked really hard and pressed well.”
