11 sign scholarships for next season

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to announce that 11 new scholars will join the club’s Under-18s next season.

Nine of those are players from the current Under-16s group that will step-up into the scholarship group, whilst two players have joined from other clubs.

This is one of the highest intakes of new scholars in recent years and Academy Manager, Eric Ramsay, is excited by their potential.

“That’s a group that we really like, the 16s group, they have done exceptionally well at their own age group and they’ve played regularly with the Unider-18s”, said Ramsay.

“It’s a group from which we’ve taken a very high number of scholars for next year (nine), we’ve added two from other clubs, which goes against the grain relative to previous years where it’s been five or sixes to come from elsewhere.

“It’s a group that we are really familiar with and our football playing style is very ingrained within that group, so we are really looking to working with them.

“We will start back in late June and there will be a lot of work to do in pre-season, but the combination of our current first years and the 16s becoming 17s is quite exciting.”

Very few of the Under-16s haven’t been involved with the Under-18s squad this season and Ramsay hopes that experience works in their favour next season.

“There’s very very few that haven’t been involved in the 18s this year, so it is a case of hoping that that work bears fruit next year”, said Eric.

“It’s not going to be a shock to them, indeed many of them have almost played an entire season as Under-18 players, so next year, for them, it’s about excelling at that level, and for the ones that have just dipped their toe in from time to time it’s about being consistent.

“It’s got the makings of a really good group and hopefully come June 27th they will hit the ground running. Although there is a lot of work to do, I think it’s as promising a group as theirs been in a while, so the futures bright in that sense.”

Eric is also pleased by the large number of local players that have been recruited.

“The number of players that we are putting up in homestay is minimal”, said Ramsay.

“They are from Telford, Shrewsbury, Mid-Wales, slightly further into the Midlands, but all not far away from being on the doorstep, and that’s something that’s part of our recruitment. It’s about getting the best local players where possible and that group represents that really well.”
