Paul Hurst on the contract offer decisions for the first year pros

Paul Hurst and his coaching staff have today taken the decisions on contract offers for the first year professionals.

The club have triggered options for Ryan Sears, George Hughes and John McAtee to extend their contracts with the club.

Callum Roberts and Chris Gallagher have unfortunately not been offered new deals with the club.

It is always a tough decision for any manager and Paul Hurst spoke to ShrewsWeb about the decision.

“It’s always a tough decision as it hasn’t quite worked out how I would have liked for them all in terms of getting games with ourselves”, said Paul.

“We have had to go down the loan route with them and some of those spells have been more successful than others.

“We’ve had them watched on loan but also take into account how we feel they have done when they have trained with us and have then progressed.

“We said to them last year that it would be the toughest year of their lives and they will have understood that now.  With Ryan, George and John this year will be harder, they have the advantage of knowing how we work but more will be expected of them.

“We’ve taken up the option of another year on them and fingers crossed they will keep progressing and understand the opportunity they have.

“We wish Callum and Chris well but it’s not the end, I’ve explained to them both that it’s hard to take all five as we have Ryan Barnett and Christos Shelis coming through as well.

“It’s far from the end for them and I will watch with interest how they develop and just because we haven’t taken up the option doesn’t mean I don’t think they can have a career and are good players.”

The club would like to thank Callum and Chris for their hard work and dedication during their time with the club.
