Academy: Sports Nutrition Lesson

29 November 2018

Shrewsbury Town Scholars visited Birmingham City University for a Sports Nutrition lesson.

Last week a group of Shrewsbury Town scholars visited Birmingham City University to take part in a sports nutrition session.

Head Of Coach Development Dan Copnall spoke to Shrewsweb about the day and what it involved.

“It was a chance to give them an opportunity to be put through a nutrition workshop where they had the chance to learn the importance of what type of foods they should be eating and why.

“The Birmingham City University Staff put on a workshop where they started with a presentation on the importance of nutrition. What types of foods they should be eating, carbohydrates, proteins and what time they should be eating. It emphasised what these foods can do to enhance your performance.

“They can’t rely on other people to cook for them, they have to understand the importance of cooking.

“They also had the chance to get their hands dirty and cook their own meal.”

Dan was pleased with some of the player's culinary skills.

“They did well, luckily myself and Kevin Briggs were there to test out some of their meals, it’s definitely worth noting that if some of the players don’t become footballers they might become a chef in the future.

“They made a chicken stir-fry with noodles and a protein smoothie. Hopefully, they can do it again in a few months time.

“The more experiences we can give the players the better, it’s not just what they do on the pitch it’s also what they do off the pitch.

“Nutrition has got even bigger over the years, it’s important we don’t neglect it and we try and give the players as much provision as we can. It’s something we can do more of in the next few months and years, not just the U18s but also down the other years as well."
