John Askey Post Salford City

11 November 2018

John Askey reflects on Town's draw 1-1 with Salford City in the first round of the FA Cup.

Shrewsbury Town welcomed Salford City to the Montgomery Waters Meadow this afternoon for the FA Cup first round.

Askey’s men took an early lead through Ollie Norburn, but were unable to secure a win against the visitors.

Askey feels Salford posed a tough test for his side and was disappointed with the goal conceded.

“It was tough,” Askey said. “I thought we were in a good position when we got the goal to go and push on.

“Conceding from a set piece has happened once or twice this season. We allowed the opposition to get into our box straight after a goal.

“I am disappointed that we conceded off a set piece. One of our players has let the man run.

“It was always going to be tough. They aren’t an average National League team as you can see by their players.

“I thought towards the end of the game there was only one team trying to win it.”

Askey feels his team could have done more to progress into the next round and hopes to see a reaction next time out.

“We didn’t move the ball quick enough,” said Askey. “We had plenty of the ball but we needed to move it quicker and get balls into the box.

“We were a little but slow in doing that, so it’s something we need to work on.

“We are still in there and still fighting. We will now have to push towards the next game.

“There home fans will all turn out and we have got to roll our sleeves up and have a good go again.

“It wont be easy, but we still have the players to go there and get the win.”
