John Askey pre Salford City

John Askey pre Town's FA Cup fixture with Salford City.

Shrewsbury Town take on Salford City this weekend in the first round of the FA Cup.

Town won against AFC Wimbledon last time out and will be looking to achieve back-to-back wins going forward.

John Askey is pleased his team are going into the fixture off the back of a win and hopes his side will build on that form.

“I was really pleased, especially with it being our first win away from home,” Askey said. “I think it will give the players more confidence.

“Our home form has been good. That’s one thing we needed to do – was to get our first away win to get that monkey off our back.

“Hopefully this will be the start of more to come. It was difficult because of the way Wimbledon play.

“The sun was glaring down the pitch and there was a bit of a wind. It was difficult in the first-half.

“The players showed real fight, desire and passion and they got their rewards. I was very pleased.”

Town next take on Salford City in the first round of the FA Cup. Askey is looking forward to the tie but expects a tough test from the visitors.

“They will come to us with nothing to lose,” Askey said. “They are a decent team with some good players.

“Majority of them have played at this level, so it will be a tough game.

“When I saw the draw and saw that it was a home tie – I thought that we have a great chance.

“We have got players who can more than match them and there is no reason why we can’t get that win.

“The FA Cup always gives everyone a lift. It’s good for the club with the money it brings in.”
