England U17 manager praises Shrewsbury set-up after win over Russia

Shrewsbury Town welcomed the England Under-17 squad to the Montgomery Waters Meadow this afternoon.

The England Under-17 manager, Steve Cooper, guided his side to an impressive three nil win over Russia’s youth side.

Cooper was pleased with the result and was happy to have visited Shrewsbury once again.

“We love coming here to Shrewsbury,” Cooper said. “They really look after us and are very easy to work with.

“The dressing room was nice anyway beforehand, but it’s a step up for the boys to be playing in an arena like this.

“It’s a wonderful stadium and an excellent pitch - on a day where other teams might have had to call the game off.

“It was never in any doubt, so fair play to the ground staff.

“It was a nice surprise to see the improvements, which set the right environment and tone for the players to go and perform. We are grateful for that.”

Cooper also mentioned he was pleased with the playing surface at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

“It held up brilliantly,” Cooper said. “There would have been lots of other pitches that wouldn’t have been playable today, but it was never in doubt, which tells you something about the pitch.

“We knew it was a good pitch. You see the Shrewsbury games on TV and we always have a look at the state of the pitch.

“We hope we can come back next year, because they always do a good job.”
