George Pilkington post Walsall

30 October 2018

George Pilkington reflects on Town's Central League Cup fixture with Walsall.

Shrewsbury Town took on Walsall in the Central League Cup this afternoon.

Town managed to secure a 0-3 win over the Saddlers, with goals from Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Lenell John-Lewis.

First-team coach George Pilkington was pleased with the team performance, particularly in the second-half.

“We started both halves well,” Pilkington said. “We didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked in the first-half.

“Their keeper made a great save in the first-half and Steve Arnold made a great save right on half-time for us to go in 0-0.

“We came out for the second-half, started excellently and took our chances.

“We got two goals from corners and Lenny took his goal well, so yeah, it was a really pleasing performance.

“It’s important to keep the fitness levels up and it’s better to be playing games like this. You can’t get the same intensity in training sometimes.

“Hopefully this stands them in good stead going forward to Saturday’s first-team game.

“It was a good exercise and it was a good win.”

Pilkington feels the game is a good opportunity for the players to put themselves in the manager’s thoughts ahead of the weekend fixture with AFC Wimbledon.

“That’s what the players should be looking to do in these games,” Pilkington said.

“They should be looking to put themselves in the managers mind for team selection on Saturday.

“I’m sure a few of them have done themselves a favour ahead of the game. “

Town next travel to AFC Wimbledon this coming Saturday for the next Sky Bet League One fixture.
