John Askey reflects on Town's loss to Oxford United.
Shrewsbury Town lost out three nil away to Oxford Untied at the Kassam Stadium.
Town were unable to bounce back from two first-half goals and the U’s secured all three points with a third in the second period.
John Askey was disappointed with the result and feels his team didn’t apply themselves to their full potential.
“We came out from a result where we worked our socks off and within 10 minutes we handed the result to Oxford,” Askey said post-match.
“It’s very disappointing to concede the first goal – just allowing the man to run. It was poor.
“We hadn’t started. Once we did starts there wasn’t a great deal in the game, but it was too late by then.
“We need to be more aggressive and strong in the penalty box and that wasn’t the case.
“In the second-half we did a little bit better and nullified them. It just shows that in the first 10 minutes we weren’t at it
“We huffed and puffed but never looked like making a break through.”
Askey feels his team need to find a better consistency week in week out to achieve results.
“We have got to reproduce good performances week in week out,” Askey said. “I said to the players that if they want long careers - that’s what they have to do.
“Quite a few of our players you don’t know what you’re going to get each week from them.
“We have got to do better. It’s a tough league, Oxford are on a good run but we have to go again now.
“We have got Wimbledon next game and it’s important that we realise what gets you points. Hard work and competing, we didn’t do enough of that.”
