John Askey Post Tranmere Rovers

9 October 2018

Askey reflects on Town's 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

Askey’s men picked up an emphatic 6-0 victory at home to Tranmere in the Checkatrade Trophy. Okenabirhie stole the show with an impressive hat-trick. Goals also came from John-Lewis, Beckles and Docherty. Askey was delighted with his teams performance as a whole

“It was a good performance and it shows that we have strong squad. It couldn’t have really gone any better for us tonight.

“I’m really pleased, it gives everyone a lot of confidence. Even Steve in goal, he made a save early on, that could have been a different game if he hadn’t saved it.

Askey was very impressed with what he saw from Okenabirhie “Not only his goals but his all round play was very good as well, but I could say that about the other 10 as well.

“Goals have been lacking and it just shows if we can get a goal early on how it can relax the team and force the opposition to come at you.

“It’s really good for their confidence obviously with getting the win on Saturday as well, whilst resting a few players tonight. It’s good for the whole squad.”

“Everyone will be buoyant and looking forward to training on Thursday.

“It’s important you don’t get carried away with those wins but it can only give you confidence.”

“Players pick systems, the players that we got out tonight obviously were suited to playing three at the back, with the wingbacks which allowed us to play with two up front.

“You’re always looking to try things and these are the games to do it.

Askey admits this result has given him food for thought going into Saturday’s game. “That’s what you want from these games it gives you a bit of a headache.

Town's next game is away to Fleetwood Town on Saturday
