John Askey Pre Sunderland

18 October 2018

John Askey looks ahead to Town's fixture with Sunderland.

Shrewsbury Town take on Sunderland this Saturday at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Town will be looking to bounce back after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town last time out.

The Town manager, John Askey, was disappointed with the result and hopes to see his team respond with a positive performance against the Black Cats.

“I think with the first-half performance we can’t complain,” said Askey. “Second-half we were much better and could have come away with a result.

“Once we sorted ourselves out and started to work a little bit harder – then who ever we have played this season we have more than matched.

“We are looking to do that again – I’m just hoping that on Saturday it was just a bit of a blip in the first-half.

“We go again and you can’t have a better game to come back to. It’s going to be a good game in the fact that the stadium is going to be full.

“All the players are going to be up for it and will be wanting to do well.”

Askey is expecting a tough test from Sunderland but admits his team will be looking to take the game to the visitors.

“We just want to go out there and do well,” Askey said. “You want to do well every week, but games like this are a little bit more special.

“We just need to keep believing in what we are doing and hopefully we can perform against one of the better teams in the league.

“You have to realise that they are in League One and they are in this league for a reason.

“The squad is obviously strong and they have good players, but it’s a good opportunity for our players to show what they can do.

“Who ever you play - you have always got a chance and Sunderland are in League One for a reason. There is no reason why we can’t go into the game believing we can’t win it.”
