A reflects on Town's 2-0 win over Southend United

Shrewsbury Town welcomed Southend United to the Montgomery Waters Meadow this afternoon.

Askey’s men sealed their first win of the season, with a 2-0 win over Southend United.

Askey was pleased to get the win but feels his side still have room for improvement.

“It has been a long time coming, hasn’t it,” Askey said post match. “I was wondering when it was going to come and it’s relief as much as anything at the moment.

“We started well and the goal came at a good time. There is still things we need to improve on, but what I was pleased about was the amount of chances that we had.

“We could have scored more goals, having said that, we could have conceded. Today that little bit of luck came when we needed it, which can win you games.

“We are looking for people who can score goals and it happened for them today. I thought not only did they score; their overall play was really good.

“I was very pleased with Lee Angol how he held the ball up. I felt the referee harshly treated him and we should have been given fouls, not having fouls against us. To be honest I don’t care about that at the moment.”

Askey feels this win will give his team confidence and hopes the result will push them on to more points.

“The big thing is the confidence,” Askey said. “We haven’t been getting the wins, but we haven’t been losing either.

“If we can keep that mentality where we don’t lose till the end of the season – then hopefully we will win more than we draw.

“There is still things to improve on, but today was big for us. If we hadn’t of won the pressure would have mounted.”

Town next face Scunthorpe United away at Glanford Park next weekend.
