Sam Ricketts On Shaun Whalley's New Deal

24 April 2019

Sam Ricketts gives his thoughts on Shaun Whalley's new two-year deal with the club.

Shrewsbury Town are pleased to announce that Shaun Whalley has put pen to paper and signed a new two-year deal that will see him a the club until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The versatile midfielder has been a great servant to the club since signing from Luton in June 2015. Whalley has made over 150 appearances for the club and scored 23 goals.

Sam Ricketts spoke to Shrewsweb and told us how he was delighted to see Shaun commit his future to the club for another two years.

"He's a very good player and has proved it for a number of years now at this level," said Sam. "He's got ability and can do things which an awful lot of players at this level can't do.

"He can unlock defences, he's got really good ability for providing goals and assists. He's a real threat in the attacking third.

"We're delighted to have him stay at the club.

"He's really devoted to football and loves football, he was desperate to stay so it was great that we could get everything agreed.

"Shaun is one of those players where he just wants to go looking for the ball. If you can get him on the ball in the final third then he's a big threat so that's what we try and do."

Sam believes that even though Shaun is in his early 30's there is still a lot left for him to offer on the pitch.

"He moves really well, he's got great energy, speed and work rate. What he has got is a real desire to succeed and be successful.

"We have a great relationship, I like his attitude and his desire to be a good footballer.

"He loves the club and loves what we're trying to do now and he's a big part of that."
