Sam Ricketts Post Coventry City

28 April 2019

Sam Ricketts reflects on Town's 1-1 draw with the Sky Blues.

Shrewsbury Town managed to secure a draw against Coventry City to guarantee the Club’s Sky Bet League One status.

Fejiri Okenabirhie scored a second-half equaliser and Town held out against the Sky Blues.

Sam Ricketts was pleased with the result and is proud of his team for getting over the line against a good Coventry side.

“This is very pleasing,” said Sam. “In a way I am glad we did that 100 percent ourselves.

“I said to the players yesterday regardless of any other results, we are going to come here and get a result.

“We needed to make ourselves safe. I am a big believer in life that if you want something you go and do it yourself.

“We didn’t rely on any other people and took responsibility. That is pleasing today. We made ourselves 100 percent safe.

“I was disappointed at half-time because we want to hit heights which I know we can hit.

“We were about 60 or 70 percent first-half. We had a few words at half-time and in the second-half we were far, far better.

“We controlled vast amounts of the game and it was generally us asking the questions. We had better territory and in the second-half I was pleased with the performance.”

Sam also recognised the fans support during the game and outlined their importance to the team.

“The fans were brilliant today,” said Town’s manager. “They have been in full voice singing all game.

“I could hear them over my shoulder and it was brilliant. The best thing is that we have put a performance in that hopefully they enjoyed.

“We got that point that got us mathematically safe and that made their journey worth while.

“As always, we are tremendously appreciative of their support and they are a huge reason of us being successful.

“Not just today but at Southend. They carry on driving the team and that is huge.

“It’s give and take. We have to be a team they can enjoy and support and we need them if we are struggling.”
