England MU20s Squad Named For September Internationals

30 August 2019

Keith Downing has picked a 21-strong squad as England MU20s open their season with games against the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The Young Lions kick-off against the Dutch in Shrewsbury on Thursday 5 September (7pm BST KO).

They will then travel to Basel for their second game against the Swiss on Monday 9 September (6pm CET KO).

Downing moves into the U20 head coach role after spending last season as U19 boss, where he worked with many of the side.

The squad for this month’s games sees a return to the England set-up for defender Joel Latibeaudiere after injury kept him side-lined last season.

And there are first England call-ups for Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams, midfielder Ryan Giles who is currently on loan at Shrewsbury Town and forward Jack Clarke.

Tickets are on sale now for England v Netherlands.

Downing said: “We’ve selected a mixed group of players of those who have been involved before in different age groups and some new faces as well.  We’re also mixed in terms of age and we’re able to include players that can be long-term prospects for the next U21 EURO Finals.

“We have players who haven’t been involved before but have been playing well for their clubs, so the opportunities are definitely there to make their mark with England.

“This year is really about developing players and their international careers but with the intention of winning the elite league.  We want this group to be in the habit of winning as a team while improving individually.

“We have a really strong programme for this age group and these two matches are a great example of that.  Netherlands are always a good test at every age group, they’ve had a lot of success in recent seasons and we’re expecting a good match in front of our supporters in Shrewsbury.

“Switzerland are a well-organised side and difficult to play against.  It’ll be two very different challenges for our players which is the benefit of having such a varied programme.”

Tickets for England v Netherlands are priced £5 for adults and U12s go for free.  Concession (over-65s, under-18s and students) tickets are £1 while Charter Standard and group booking discounts apply.

Tickets can be bought via www.ShrewsburyTown.com/Tickets, by calling 01743 273 943 or in person at the club ticket office.
