Sam Ricketts On New Midfield Options

16 August 2019

Shrewsbury Town have confirmed the signings of young midfielders Sean Goss and Louis Thompson.

Sean has joined Town on a two-year deal from an undisclosed fee from Championship side QPR, while Louis joins on a season-long loan from Premier League side Norwich.

The two players have been added in time to bolsters Town's midfield options ahead of this weekends Sky Bet League One game at home to Rochdale.

Town manager Sam Ricketts spoke to ShrewsWeb about the additions and spoke about Louis first, a player he knows from their time together at Swindon Town.

"Louis is a great young player, a player who worked himself from Swindon to Norwich", said Sam.

"He is someone who I have been after for about three months now, so it's nice when something finally ticks over the line.

"He's a great player with a great pedigree and some we are delighted to have in."

Louis will bring some energy and excitement to the Town midfield, and adds another good option to the squad.

"Louis is really dynamic with or without the ball, he is high energy with some quality as well", said Sam.

"That's why he's at Norwich and he's been with the first team over pre-season, I was told he may be with the first team all year so that shows the quality he has.

"We are hoping to get him into the squad, get him some game time and get him up to speed."

There is another addition to the squad with youngster Sean Goss going on a permanent deal. Sean started his career with Man United before a move to QPR in 2017.

"Sean is a young player who for one reason or another hasn't quite happened for him at QPR", said Sam.

"He has a great pedigree coming through at Man United, has great ability on the ball and technically very good with a great left foot.

"He is someone who will bring something different to the midfield, someone who can get on the ball and get us playing a little bit.

"He will be good at getting us to switch play which will really complement what we are trying to do."

The gaffer has set his stamp on the style of play that Town will set-up with this season. The additions to the squad over the summer have been to play that style, and Sean and Louis will add to those options.

"Definitely, I don't just want to bring anyone in, Sean will come in with a range of passing which will help our play with wingbacks", said Sam.

"We need to be switching the ball more than what we are, to really make our system work.

"Hopefully they can both hit the ground running and be a big part of what we are trying to do."

The Town midfield options have been reduced with injuries to Ollie Norburn and Josh Laurent but both should be back in a few weeks. With Louis and Sean now in the squad the midfield options now look strong.

"We are a little bit short for a number of reasons but it's important that we bring in the right players and not just any players", said Sam.

"And Louis and Sean certainly will add quality to the team.

"We've added quality into an area of the pitch where we are already strong if everyone is fit.

"What we are trying to do is bring in players with different attributes and qualities to try and give us the best chance of being successful this season."
