Sam Ricketts Post Wolves

5 February 2019

Sam Ricketts reflects on Town's FA Cup clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Shrewsbury Town travelled to Molineux to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fourth-round replay fixture.

Town were unable to secure a win against the Premier League side despite scoring twice.

Sam Ricketts was pleased with his side’s effort but was ultimately disappointed that his team couldn’t snatch the win.

“I am really proud of the players,” said Sam. “They should be proud of themselves and their performance tonight.

“We have pushed a Premier League side to the very, very end over two games, not just a one off, two games.

“Even late on we were still having chances to get back into the game and force extra time.

“From that point of view I am very, very proud but still disappointed at not winning the game.

“I don’t think we could have asked much more of the players tonight. They were outstanding in their attitude, their discipline and their work rate.

“They never gave up even after conceding in the first minute away at packed Molineux. That would have sent a few teams under.”

Over 3000 Shrews fans supported Town and Sam was pleased with their tremendous support during the tie.

“There are times when we need the supporters and times when we need to give something back to them,” said Town’s manager.

“The supporters were outstanding tonight. It was an unbelievable turn out.

“If you don’t win a game, you have to be going home knowing that your team gave everything they could.

“I spoke to the players at the end of the game and told them we have set standards now.

“You can’t hit those levels and then be a long way off it the next game. We need that consistency

“Whether we win or lose a game – we have to maintain those standards and we have to fight right up until the end.”
