Sam Ricketts post Fleetwood Town

1 January 2019

Sam Ricketts reflects on Town's 0-0 draw with Fleetwood.

Shrewsbury Town earned a point at home against Fleetwood Town after a 0-0 score line.

Steve Arnold and the Town defence kept a clean sheet as Town made it two games in a row undefeated.

Sam Ricketts felt his team could have done more to secure all three points but was pleased with his players efforts.

“I thought it looked like two teams who had celebrated New Years to be honest,” said Sam.

“We never really got going fully. What you saw was the efforts of teams who have played a lot of games.

“I was delighted with the clean sheet and I was delighted with the desire from the players to push on.

“We had a few half chances and a few just outside of the box. Fey had a chance.

“I’m not saying we were brilliant, but I thought we were the only team stepping on it and trying to win the game.

“We gave everything we could physically and the players are shattered. I couldn’t have asked any more.”

Sam was pleased with the impact of his substitutions and feels Alex Gilliead can offer a lot to his team.

“Gilliead can glide past players very easily,” said Sam. “He’s got some pace and quality. He made a good impact in the second-half.

“He came on and really lifted the team and that’s why for 20 minutes they couldn’t get out of their half.

“Albeit we weren’t peppering the goal, the impact Gilli made was excellent.

“Defensively it was an excellent clean sheet and we need to keep the scores at zeros and ones as it always gives you a chance in the game.

“We just didn’t quite manage to get that one goal that would have got us that three points.

“We want to win every game that we go into. Like I said, we tried to do everything we could to win the game.

“We just couldn’t quite get that little bit of final action – whether it be a shot, cross or the final ball. We need to be just a little bit better.”
