On Thursday 18th July the Shrewsbury Town Sleepout, sponsored by Shropshire Homes will be back for 2019 at Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium to help raise money and awareness for homelessness across Shropshire.
The event will see participants spending the night sleeping outside at Montgomery Waters Meadow with only a sleeping bag to raise awareness about homelessness issues across the county. A report from Shelter in November last year indicated that there are now over 500 people in Shropshire who are currently homeless, a 12 % rise since 2017.
Funds raised from the event will go towards both the Shrewsbury Ark and Shrewsbury Town in the Community to help continue our projects across the county.
Last year’s Sleepout raised over £7,000 in total after 34 participants slept out in the stadium including Shropshire Home’ s Managing Director and STitC trustee, Howard Thorne, who said “It was quite an experience to sleep out on concrete. However, the novelty wore off around 3.00am when it got quite chilly and the ground seemed to get harder! We were all pleased to be able to go home for a filling breakfast and a shower. It really made me realise how tough it must be to be really homeless and to have to sleep in those conditions every night, especially in the winter. Shropshire Homes are pleased to have sponsored the sleep out and helped in a small way to support the homeless of Shrewsbury”
A number of participants have already signed up for the event in 2019, with Steve Madden giving the reasons behind him taking part, “I see it everyday, people who haven’t had the opportunity they hoped they might and they have ended up in a really difficult situation. I am proud to be part of the Shrewsbury Town in the Community Sleepout and hope to raise significant funds for this worthy cause and help to make a difference.”
