Ryan Barnett Contract Extended

2 May 2019

Ryan Barnett discusses his loan spell and aims for next season.

Shrewsbury Town can confirm that a one-year extension has been exercised on midfielder Ryan Barnett’s contract.

The 19-year-old has returned to the club following his loan spell with AFC Telford United.

Ryan was pleased with his loan spell with the Bucks but is looking forward to getting down to work with Town.

“My loan went great to be honest,” said the midfielder. “I played more than 20 men’s football games.

“That’s massive when you’re a young player, you just want to be out there playing games.

“I think I have impressed during my time. It was unfortunate to miss out on the last game by one goal like we did.

“I had only played youth level before along with a couple of first-team appearances.

“A run of 20 games in men’s football has set me up nicely for what ever happens next season. Overall it has been very positive but I am happy to be back here.”

Barnett is looking forward to working with the Town first-team and is hoping for a big season in the next campaign.

“I got back into training here at the start of the week,” said Barnett. “I have got to train well and hope I can make the bench for Saturday.

“I know Sam Ricketts sent people out to watch my games. Everyone has been positive and seen what I can do.

“Hopefully that plants the seed in their mind for next season. Next year is the time I want to be breaking into the first-team.

“Although, going out on loan again wouldn’t be a disaster but my goal is to get in and around the first-team.”

Sam Ricketts also provided further details of the midfielder’s return to the club

"We have an option on his contract which we will be exercising,” said Town’s manager.

"He's certainly got the potential to be a star. The loan has been good for him, he's been able to play regularly, earn the right to play.

"He's produced man of the match performances and been unlucky not to play a couple of times. It's been a good experience for him."
