David Longwell gives his reaction to Town's 4-1 win over Rochdale AFC in the Central League Cup
Shrewsbury Town’s reserves secured an impressive 4-1 victory against Rochdale AFC in the Shrews’ latest Central League Cup fixture.
Despite a tightly contested first-half, the Shrews managed to notch four goals past the away side to earn all three points. Luke McCormick was on form to secure two of the goals in his teams’ victory.
Salop academy manager, David Longwell, was pleased with the victory and enjoyed his team’s dominant display in the second-half.
“It was positive because we scored four goals,” said Longwell. “The first-half wasn’t great but we tinkered things a little bit and in the second-half we had better intensity and scored four really good goals.
“We could have scored even more goals. The positives are the reaction to the first-half and for that 25 to 30-minute period – we did really well.
The team had a couple of trialists and a couple of first-team lads with the young boys. We weren’t all over the place but we didn’t have that cohesion. It was difficult but to give them credit - they played good football.
“We wanted to get into a rhythm and do what we wanted to do. I think getting them in at half-time and changing things a little bit helped us.”
Longwell was also pleased to give valuable minutes to Luke McCormick and Lenell John-Lewis and was pleased with their contribution. He said: “It was a good afternoon for Luke, scoring two goals and it was good for Lenell. He is a really good example as a senior pro. It was his first game in about 10 months, so we are happy he was involved – it gave him really important minutes.
“I thought the two of them did really well today. Good attitudes and good leadership. As the game went on, Lenell’s performance got better and better. We only took him off because he’s only just come back.”
