Sam Ricketts reflects on Town's victory over Newcastle U21s

Shrewsbury Town secured all three points in the Leasing.Com Trophy this evening against Newcastle United’s under 21 side.

Jason Cummings, David Edwards and Fejiri Okenabirhie all got on the score sheet to secure their team the win.

The Town manager, Sam Ricketts, was pleased with the win and was pleased with his teams performance against the young Magpies side.

“I’m really pleased with the win,” said Ricketts. “I’m pleased with the clean sheet and Fey, Jason and Dave scoring.

“Overall, I am delighted with the win. At times I thought we were good. We started the game well and had fairly good control. We created good chances.

“You could see as the game went on some players who haven’t played 90 minutes, fatigue started to set in.

“I thought there were some excellent performances, so overall I am really pleased.”

The Town manager was also pleased to see a number of his offensive players getting on the score sheet.

“It was good for Jason, and getting 70 minutes was a good step forward,” said Sam. “It was good for Fey getting back in and playing nearly 90 minutes.

“There is an awful lot of positives to take from tonight. We wanted to win the game but it was an opportunity for players to get 90 minutes. There were an awful lot of boxes ticked tonight.

“Newcastle have some really good and exciting players. You can see that they are a team that are well drilled.

“You could tell they are used to playing with each other. There is a few really interesting players in that team.

“It was important we won tonight for a number of reasons. Momentum continues now, so we are really pleased. It will now come down to the Macclesfield game.”
