Sam Ricketts Pre Port Vale

Town manager looks ahead to the Leasing.com Trophy trip to Vale Park.

Town will be looking to bounce back from the weekend result away to Ipswich Town. The result wasn't what Town wanted but the performance for long spells was good.

The Leasing.com Trophy has seen Town pick-up good results in recent years and is a competition that clubs will be looking to do well in.

Town manager Sam Ricketts sat down with the press to look ahead to the game.

"We are going to go and try and win the game, as we do for any game", said Sam.

"We are a little depleted because of the internationals, we will be without Aaron Pierre, Omar Beckles and Ryan Giles.

"Apart from those we are ready and will pick a team to try and win the game."

With three mainstays of the Town defence missing it will mean opportunities for others. There are options in the squad who can slot into the defence, as well as other positions.

"It will be a bit of everything, we will need to make changes because of those lads who have come out", said Sam.

"There are a few others who will benefit from not playing so we will also look at that.

"We will look who is available to put something together, though we are lacking in defenders with the lads who are out.

"I don't mind that as it's all hands on deck time, the team spirit will come out and there are certainly several players who can play in those positions.

"There may be a few of the Academy players in the squad, but we will see closer to the game."

With the Peterborough game being postponed due to international call-ups it means the Vale game will be last for nearly two weeks.

"We want to put a good performance in and look to get back to being solid again", said Sam.

"We need to improve and move the ball better and see aspects of our game improving.

"We are starting to get players back from injury, back into the rhythm and continue to improve all the time."

Town's ranks were bolstered yesterday with the addition of strikers Callum Lang and Jason Cummings, but they won't be involved.

"The rules are that you have to register players by noon on the day before a game, so, unfortunately, Callum and Jason won't be involved", said Sam.

The Leasing.com Trophy has been a competition that Town has done well in over recent years. The game gives chances to players to get game minutes and the manager is looking to progress in the competition.

"It is a good competition and a good opportunity for sides at our level, and with no game, at the weekend it's important for squad competition", said Sam.

"You want to do well in the cups, and especially in this one, the club has recently done well in it.

"We have got options in the vast majority of places in the squad where there is competition for places, but also means we can possibly rest some if we need to."
