Match report: Wigan Athletic 1 Shrewsbury Town 1

26 December 2020

Town earn a point at the DW Stadium.

Shrewsbury Town’s afternoon in Wigan ended with Steve Cotterill’s men earning a point on the road.

A Latics goal from Will Keane was cancelled out by Shaun Whalley’s effort in the second period as both teams earned a draw.

A lively start to the game saw the hosts and Salop looking to advance into the final third as often as possible. With just over six minutes on the clock, Leon Clarke had a chance to convert from a driven Charlie Daniels cross but was unable to hit the target.

Will Keane had a half-chance to put the home side in the lead with 10 minutes to go in the first period. A slight error saw the striker run through on goal but swift action from Aaron Pierre allowed Town’s defender to ease him off the ball.

With seconds to go before the break, Shaun Whalley forced a great save from Latics shot-stopper Jamie Jones. The forward beat his man to find space in the box but was unable to guide an effort past the goalkeeper.

The home side were awarded a penalty as the half resumed. Ro-Shaun Williams fouled Tom Pearce as the Latics man ran through on goal. Keane stepped up to take the spot-kick and hammered the ball home into the side netting.

Jones made another pivotal save for the home side as Salop were looking to get back into the game. Millar fired a powerful shot towards the top corner of the net but the keeper was well placed to parry away.

In a similar move, Whalley had another opportunity to strike at goal for Town in the 67th minute. This time, his shot nestled in the corner of the goal after some smart play to lose the defender in the box.

That goal was the last meaningful contribution as Town headed home back to Shropshire with a point.
