David Longwell talks Academy pre-season

David Longwell provides an update on Town's Academy pre-season plans.

Shrewsbury Town Academy Manager David Longwell has confirmed Town's Academy will spend two weeks of their pre-season campaign on a tour of Spain.

Funded by the League Football Education, Town's Academy will spend two weeks on the Erasmus Programme as part of their full pre-season calendar where the young Salopians will play against and train with a host of Spanish clubs.

David is pleased the club have been given the opportunity and feels the Salop Academy will take full advantage of the experience.

"There is a thing called the Erasmus Programme which is a wonderful opportunity for clubs like ourselves," said David. "Every two years clubs can apply and it's funded by Erasmus - the European Fund for Culture.

"We've managed to secure that for next season, so we are going to Spain for two weeks in July. The lads will train every day as part of their pre-season programme.

"The LFE is very good at organising everything and we get to play three Spanish teams out there. We also get to link up with one of the local clubs, maybe Granada but that is yet to be confirmed.

"Their coaches come out and do three different sessions with the boys which will be good for them. Its good for the staff to see how people work in different environments.

"Alongside that, we will take the lads on cultural visits and they will get to learn some Spanish. It's a fantastic programme and all the scholars who come in will have this great opportunity. It's a great introduction to full-time professional football life."
