Sam Ricketts post Gillingham

29 January 2020

Sam Ricketts reflects on Town's 2-0 loss to Gillingham.

Shrewsbury Town’s evening in Gillingham ended in disappointment as Sam Ricketts’ team lost out 2-0.

Two first-half goals from The Gills was the difference between the two sides as the home outfit secured all three points.

Sam was disappointed with the result and felt his team could have done more to deal with The Gills threats.

“I am obviously disappointed with the result,” said Sam. “We went from Sunday, which was a real game, to a rugby game to be fair. We weren’t really built for that in the early stages.

“The pitch didn’t allow us to pass the ball but that’s not really an excuse. It descended into a rugby game and ended up with me having to put Omar upfront - we couldn’t get the game flowing.

“We hit the post, had one cleared off the line and had one that hit the side netting. Ultimately, I am disappointed that we weren’t able to play our game. We went from a really good footballing game on Sunday, to a rugby game today.

“The first goal had a couple of little mistakes in the build-up. I am disappointed, it wasn’t a great game of football, I feel sorry for those who had to pay to watch.

“We tried to freshen up the team, we have done it a couple of times. The lads have put in unbelievable efforts in the cup games and then struggled to match that in the following game. It was a real bitty, scrappy and horrible game of football.”

“Jason makes such a good impact off the bench. He enjoys making an impact - we are keen to get him playing. It was a real tough game, we couldn’t get going and couldn’t pass the ball. The opportunity was there for us to do it. Sunday was football and today was rugby. We aren’t a million miles away, we want to put performances in."
